The price of the watch has gone from $50 to $1.5 million within 7 days.  If the buyer's insurance premium is included, the total value of the watch comes to $1.65 million, more than double the estimated sale price of $800,000.

Five 42 mm Square Bang Unico models are crafted in three different materials, each of which comes with a black rubber strap and a folding clasp in the same material as the case. These early designs match the rhythms of the HUB1280 Unico Manufacture, an automatic chronograph movement composed of 354 components, oscillating at a frequency of 4 Hz.

This year, Hublot released 5 models of Square Bang Unico watches in 3 materials in which 4 standard models are made from polished titanium or exclusive King Gold with a choice of metal or black ceramic bezel. Particularly, the Square Bang Unico All Black model is limited to 250 pieces and is the only limited edition of the new collection.  Retail price for this black version is 25,900 EUR.  For the titanium/ceramic version, the price is 23,800 EUR, for the titanium version is 22,700 EUR, for the King Gold/ceramic version is 39,400 EUR and finally for the King Gold version is 42,500 EUR.

VINTAGE ROSE GOLD PATEK PHILIPPE WATCH SOLD FOR A RECORD PRICE OF OVER $7 MILLION AT SOTHEBY'S
 

A sales record was just made at Sotheby's spring watch auction in Hong Kong with 30 Patek Philippe watches and lots of vintage Gay Freres bracelets.  All are owned by an individual collector nicknamed “The Nevadian Collector”.

During the auction, the rose-gold Patek Philippe Ref.2499 watch with 37.5 mm dial, produced since 1957, estimated to sell for $3 million to $6 million.  However, 4 buyers bid over the phone and the watch was eventually raised to HKD 50 million ($7.68 million) including the buyer's insurance fees.

At this price, the rose-gold Patek Philippe Ref.2499 watch breaks the previous record by a significant margin.  Notably, this watch alone accounts for a third of the cumulative value of the deal.

Interestingly, the aforementioned watch also held the record in 2007, when it was sold by Sotheby's Geneva for $2.78 million.  This record was held for more than a decade before being surpassed by another Ref.2499 signed by Asprey, then priced at $4 million.

The record-breaking Patek Philippe watch is one of only four Ref.2499 models to be sold at auction, all belonging to a secret anonymous American collector who started collecting rare antique watches 30 years ago after selling his media business.  It is believed that this collector has more than 400 watches and now, at the age of 80, he has begun to gradually sell his fortune through Sotheby's and continuously set records throughout the buying and selling sessions.

For the first time since his death a decade ago, the treasure trove of renowned watch designer Gérald Genta has been opened, and a number of artwork pieces are up for auction.  Selected drawings and watercolors paintings reveal artworks and an unprecedented multimedia biography of him.

Recently, original sketches of the legendary designer's Patek Philippe Nautilus were sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong auction during the second part of the "Gerald Genta: Icon of Time" show. And 727,000 USD is the amount that this artwork sold. Ten guests from all over the world participated in the auction and finally belonged to a private Asian collector.  At this auction, there is a backup design of the Nautilus watch model with a leather strap instead of the current integrated steel strap.  The above artwork was successfully sold for 121,000 USD.

Moreover, 100 other artworks created by Genta are also listed including familiar designs and undisclosed personal orders from his archives, each artwork is connected to a separate NFT. Also in this auction, in turn, 100 sketches created by Genta himself were auctioned including designs and artworks that have never been shown to the public.

In February, a design drawing of the Royal Oak he created for Audemars Piguet was auctioned for $610,586. Collectors will be able to purchase Gérald Genta's Royal Oak from Audemars Piguet soon. Crafted from 18K gold and steel, this one-of-a-kind timepiece will be available at Sotheby's Biannual Auction in Geneva in May 2022 which coincides with the design's 50th anniversary.  

The drawings that will also be featured in the “Gérald Genta: Icon of Time Sale” include Disney's 'Fantasy' watch collection released in 1986;  Pasha de Cartier models first debuted in 1985, three Grand Sonnerie wristwatch designs from 1995 produced to emulate London's Big Ben, and other royal designs including  The Queen of England… A portion of the sales revenue will go to the Gérald Genta Heritage Association to encourage and honor the next generation of watchmakers.

From Christie's to Phillips, today's leading auction houses are combining physical works with digital copies which ensures a artwork will retain its value for years after it's sold.  In this case, Genta NFT art works will serve as proof of ownership and provenance for each design.

RICHARD MILLE LAUNCHES NEW WATCH INSPIRED BY JAPANESE SAMURAI CULTURE HERITAGE

The watch was created as a result of a conversation between the founder of Richard Mille watchmaker and one of his key partners, formula 1 legend Fernando Alonso, who inspired one of Richard Mille's most be-loved creations, RM 67-02 Fernando Alonso 2020. Both sides are enthusiasts of traditional Japanese art.  It took them 4 years to design, develop and release a limited edition of just 75 watches.

The Richard Mille RM 47 Tourbillon watch's spectacular dial is the work of a team of engravers Pierre-Alain Lozeron and painter Valérie Lozeron who took no less than 16 and 9 hours to create the samurai armor entirely by hand.

The dial is decorated with miniature samurai armor that hand-engraved in 3N gold, a material reminiscent of the gold leaf commonly used in Japanese craftsmanship.  There is also the Ramon emblem of the Asano samurai clan, once led by the legendary Asano Naganori, a warrior of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. A pair of designed swords cuts across the dial while Maple leaf motif embellished with tian, carbon TPT and polished 3N gold crown.

The Richard Mille RM 47 Tourbillon watch is powered by the newly developed large caliber RM47 movement.  It is a manual winding tourbillon movement that has been scaled down to slim line proportions to match the large samurai figure on the dial.  The tourbillon and part of the gear train are visible from either side of the case, while the base plate and bezel are made of grade 5 titanium with a black PVD coating which combines corrosion resistance with hardness and an extremely flat surface.

All the fine details are housed in Richard Mille's signature barrel frame with black ceramic bezel and back which is the perfect backdrop to highlight the samurai sculpture above.

At the Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022 event, Chopard introduced the latest version of the Alpine Eagle series.

This is a super watch that improves the flying tourbillon mechanism of the Chopard house.

The new Alpine Eagle Flying Tourbillon watch retains the aesthetic philosophy of typical sports models from Chopard with round case with meticulously finished edges, adjustable knob, engraving simulating a compass, bezel is fixed by eight screws grouped in pairs.  The dial is 41 mm in diameter, coated with luminescent-coated Roman numerals, indexes and hands, Aletsch Blue brushed rays radiating from the tourbillon.  The steel band provides comfort on the wrist.

The watch is made of Chopard's exclusive Lucent Steel A223 with anti-abrasion resistance, at the same time does not cause allergies, low in impurities and high in luminance.  The watch is water resistant to a depth of 100 meters.

Slim design with a thickness of only 8mm is the highlight, bringing elegance to the wearer.  Chopard completes the case with a transparent sapphire crystal back cover to show off the L.U.C 96.24-L movement, which developed from Chopard's first in-house movement (L.U.C 96.01-L launched in 1997).

JACOB & CO. LAUNCHES THE WORLD'S FIRST METAVERSE WATCH

With the strong development of digital and the rise of Metaverse trend, luxury brands are finding ways to join this mystical virtual world.  In which, the brand Jacob & Co.  continues to present the Astronomia Metaverso physical watch collection inspired by the virtual universe with two new physical and NFT (non-fungible token) watch versions.

For the first time, at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022, the Patek Philippe watch brand decided to combine two elements into one.  This retro-styled watch model is the first to have two functions: an annual calendar and a travel time that shows a second time zone.

Patek Philippe introduced and highlighted at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022 that the movement inside the new Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Travel Time 5326G-001 holds up to eight patents.  The watch case is made of white gold while the dial is processed for a vintage look.  As soon as it was launched, the Patek Philippe 5326G-001 was predicted to be the most sought-after watch model in the near future.

The design is the most noticeable point on the Patek Philippe 5326G-001 when combining classic, luxurious features with a certain boldness.  The familiar Calatrava-shaped watch case in white gold, fully polished with sharp and pointed lugs.  The most notable elements are the beautiful Clous de Paris (hobnail) decorative pattern and the smooth bezel has angled design.

To add to the classic look, Patek Philippe has equipped the Annual Calendar Travel Time 5326G-001 with two interchangeable strap options. The original version wears a beige calfskin strap, hand-stitched and finished in nubuck leather.  The strap is also calfskin, hand-stitched with a black embossed fabric pattern.  The retail price of the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Travel Time 5326G-001 watch is 65,000 CHF (about 70,000 USD).

Along with Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Travel Time 5326G-001, at the Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022, this Swiss luxury watchmakers also launched a model with a similar retro style, but less complicated.  It is a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5226G-001 watch with only the time display function with a date window, priced at about $35,000.

At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022 event, Rolex is one of the watch brands that receives the most attention from the public.  Many media outlets, individuals, and watch lovers have made predictions about the new Rolex 2022 releases that will be made public at the biggest event in the watch industry before the event opens.

After a series of major watch brands decided to leave Baselworld and come to Watches and Wonders Geneva (formerly SIHH), the Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022 has become the most noticed watch event of the year with the participation of  of countless watch brands.

The Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022 event lasted a week from March 30 in Geneva.  Below are latest watches from the new Rolex 2022 releases including watch models from the collection: Air-King, GMT-Master II, Day-Date, Yacht-Master, Datejust, and even Deepsea.

1- Rolex Air-King 2022 watch

The Rolex Air-King collection symbolizes the privileged relationship between the Rolex brand and flights during the golden age of aviation in the 1930s where people are obsessed with the quest to conquer the sky.

Launched since 1958, the word “Air-King” has appeared and remained on the dial, making it instantly recognizable to fans. Since 2016, Rolex has revamped the black Air-King dial in a way that is easy to see, easy to read with a combination of hour markers of 3, 6, 9 with surrounding minute markers. Prominent on it is the green seconds hand - the color markings specific to the Rolex name.

This year, the Air-King has been refined by Rolex both in terms of aesthetics and movement, culminating in the model number 126900. The new model keeps many of the features of the Air-King 116900 such as the stainless steel case,  40mm diameter, 100m water resistant, but added a few new elements.  Points like the crown have been covered with ear guards, like with the Submariner, GMT-Master or Daytona series.

The dial of the Rolex Air-King 126900 of 2022 is also changed with subtle details.  For example, piles only 3, 6 and 9 o'clock have been added with luminescent material.  Or the 5-minute stake has been added with a leading zero to avoid confusing watch lovers.

The Rolex 2022 releases’s biggest update of this year's Air-King watch compared to its predecessor comes from the part hidden inside the steel case.  Inside the watch is the state-of-the-art Caliber 3230, with its exclusive Superlative certification, which ensures precise operation with an error of -2/+ 2 seconds per day.

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air King 126900 has a retail price of CHF 7,000.

2- Rolex GMT-Master II 2022 watch 

Unveiled at the Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022 event, the Rolex GMT-Master II 2022 watch keeps the same specs as its predecessors but has a new look.  For the first time, Rolex's iconic dual time zone watch features a rotating green bezel, to be more precise, a ceramic bezel that comes in two colors: black and green.

Notably, while the size of the parts and the inner movement of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II remain the same, what makes the watch model most special in the collection is not the color, but the crown position, date window with Cyclops glass. Specifically, Rolex has moved the upper 3 components to the opposite position, to the left of the case.

The newly released model is exactly the Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II 126720. The 40mm stainless steel case.  The bi-directional Cerachrom ceramic bezel is rotatable in both directions.  And for everyday use (and beyond), the GMT-Master II 126720 is water resistant to 100m.  Inside the watch is the 3285 movement, similar to the popular Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLRO Pepsi or Rolex GMT-Master II 126711CHNR.

Retail price for the Rolex GMT-Master II 126720CHNR watch is 10,500 EUR and it will soon join the list of the most sought-after steel watches on the market with its brothers.

3- Rolex Yacht-Master 2022 Watch Collection 

There are two new Rolex Yacht-Master watch models that were launched at the Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022 event.  Both are 42mm in diameter, the same as the previous design.  Aesthetically, however, Rolex gave the Yacht-Master some novelty, in response to watch lovers’ expectations.

The 42mm Yacht-Master watch series previously are only available in white and rose gold cases, now available in a new material - yellow gold.  The new Rolex Yacht-Master 42 watch model number 226658 features a gold case, bidirectional rotatable bezel, and translucent ceramic minute markers, the Rolex Yacht-Master 226658 has a durable black Oysterflex bracelet, can be ready with the owner to conquer each wave in the open sea, moreover it is luxurious and eye-catching.

Not stopping there, the Rolex Yacht-Master 226659 has a new version this year.  Just like how a specialized watch like the GMT-Master II used to have a meteorite dial, this Rolex 2022 releases, for the first time, the Rolex Yacht-Master comes with an eagle-eye dial which is described as a “Falcon’s Eye dial”.

The prices for two new Rolex Yacht-Master watch models are CHF 30,700 (Falcon's Eye) and CHF 27,000 (Yellow gold).

4- Rolex Deepsea 2022 Watch 

As the deepest diving watch in the entire Rolex family, the Deepsea honors the prototype watch that accompanied director James Cameron to explore the mysterious Mariana Trench.

At Rolex 2022 releases, Rolex launched the latest Deepsea model that has been upgraded with its most modern Caliber 3235 movement with a time display function and a date window.  The latest Rolex Deepsea 2022 watch is released in two versions: one with a blue dial with a gradient effect and a more conservative version with a jet black finish.  Both have model number 136660.

5- Rolex Day-Date 2022 Watch Collection 

Both the Rolex Day-Date watches in 36mm and 40mm sizes have new versions.  However, Rolex still keeps the old rule, the Rolex Day-Date is only made from precious metal cases which can be yellow gold, rose gold, white gold or platinum.

The most prominent of the Rolex Day-Date 2022 series released is the watch version with a platinum case with a 40mm inner bezel.  This elegant Rolex watch is sure to weigh quite a bit on its owner's hand.  In addition to the icy blue dial, the famous watch brand also offers a choice of white, silver gray or textured ice blue dials for the Rolex Day-Date platinum.

6- Rolex Datejust 2022 watch collection

Launched since 1945, the Rolex Datejust has become an indispensable symbol of the Swiss watch brand.  The Rolex Datejust's simple yet detailed dial has become an inspiration for many other watch brands to follow.

At the Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022 event, Rolex announced a lot of new Datejust models (the most) in all sizes from 28mm, 31mm, 36mm to 41mm.  As expected, the most compact, 28mm Lady-Datejust models have been dotted with more feminine colors as well as more diamonds.

While the 36mm and 41mm Rolex Datejust series maintain the old year's "palm leaf" and "fold" motifs but develop a wider range of colors, the Rolex Datejust 31 welcomes a new texture on the dial.  The entire dial of the Rolex Datejust 31 watch is interlaced with petals.  Processed by modern technology, each flower has a different finish which can be brushed, matte or sparkling.  Rolex has really handled the new floral dial of the Datejust in detail.

GUCCI SWISS TIMEPIECES AT THE GUCCI WONDERLAND EVENT

This year, Gucci marks the 50th anniversary by the launch of its Swiss watch line with its second “High Watchmaking” collection.

The “Gucci Wonderland” event in Geneva, a wonderful fair that has helped to inspire viewers with colorful gems, wonders and sophisticated watchmaking works.  New Gucci-designed watches include the Gucci 25h Skeleton tourbillon, the G-Timeless Planetarium, the G-Timeless Moonlight, the G-Timeless Dancing Bees and the Grip Sapphire.

For the first time, Gucci also presents a journey through 5 decades of “Italian design, Swiss made”, using watch diaries of the 50s, handmade watches from the 60s and gem-watches from the 70s.

In the advertising video to promote the special event, Gucci uses a fairy tale concept, simulating a splendid "planetrium" Ferris wheel with embossed emeralds and haunted house displaying skeleton watch dials.  Rubber ducks float in a circular pool and the final appearance of the watches in the collection ends the clip.

The Rolex Day-Date was first launched in 1956. However, its history dates back to 1950, when a patent was filed in Switzerland for a watch that displayed both the day and the month on the dial.

The first Rolex Day-Date watches were produced in white, yellow, or rose gold with a domed bezel (ref.6510 version) or with a slotted bezel (ref.6511).  These watch models were only produced for a year before being replaced by ref. 6611.

Entering the 1960s, Rolex Day-Date watch became famous and loved by world leaders.

The Rolex Platinum Daytona Turquoise Dial is said to be one of the only five Daytona that uses a platinum case and is equipped with a Zenith movement.  Auction house Sotheby\'s once said that Rolex had produced many automatic Rolex Daytona watches, but the materials used mostly were stainless steel, white gold, gold gold or a blend of steel and gold over the years.  The platinum Daytona version is extremely rare.

 This watch is estimated to sell for $512,000 to $1,025 million.  However, above all expectations, it was sold for 6 times the lowest estimated price.

According to FH (Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry), the total value of Swiss watch exports to the Middle East in 2021 is more than $2.2 billion which accounts for about 10% of global watch export value, in which almost half of them are from the UAE - that makes this country the eighth most important single country market in the world.  With a total population of 8 million that shows this country’s purchasing power.

VII- 10 OUTSTANDING WATCHES IN CHRISTIE'S RECORD AUCTION

Christie's two auctions: Legends of Time and Exceptional Season of Watches raised $34.8 million, the highest revenue for a single watch auction of this auction unit.

In the list of 10 outstanding watches in Christie's record auction, 8 watches were from the Patek Philippe brand, the other two watches were from Rolex and F.P.  Journe.

10 OUTSTANDING WATCHES IN CHRISTIE'S RECORD AUCTION

1- Patek Philippe

The standout at the auction was the Patek Philippe ref. 3448J “Senza Luna”. While many other Senza Luna watch models have been produced, the watch that appeared at this auction was the only one confirmed by Patek Philippe to be genuine intervention. Others are believed to have been modified by a third party.  This one-of-a-kind watch sold for nearly $3.76 million.

Patek World Time watches are being sought after and in the auction, three pieces of this watch line appeared.

The first is the Patek Philippe World Time Ref. 1415 in 18k rose gold.  It is believed to be one of the only two still in existence with cloisonne enamel surface depicting the Eastern hemisphere.  This Patek Philippe Ref. 1415 watch sold for $2.28 million.

The second watch is the Patek Philippe World Time Ref. 2523/1 in yellow gold with a mesh metal bracelet, sold for $2.05 million.

The third watch is the Patek Philippe World Time Platinum Ref. 1415, an one-of-a-kind platinum watch that sold for $1.9 million.

Another super watch also named by the fans in this auction is the Patek Philippe 'Gradowski' Grande Complication which is sold for 517,694 USD.  The pocket watch was produced in 1890 for the famous collector in the world Jean de Gradowski.  At that time, it was the most complicated watch that Patek Philippe brand had ever produced.

The watch features a unique minute counter with Grande et Petite Sonnerie movement, no key needed, instantaneous perpetual calendar, central time indicator for Julian and Gregorian calendars, moon phase and chronograph sub-dial with counter 60 minutes in the center.

2- F.P. Journe

In recent years, watches from independent watch brands have appeared more frequently in prestigious auctions and one of the watch names that has got attention is F.P. Journe.

According to McKinsey, an US-based consulting firm, the used watch market has a total value of 18 billion USD in 2018. By 2025, it is predicted to increase in value to 30 billion USD.
