ROLEX LAUNCHES NEW DATEJUST MODEL ENGRAVED WITH CATARACT TECHNOLOGY

Luxury Swiss watch brand Rolex has launched a new version of its sophisticated laser-engraved Datejust with the price start at $7,050.

As one of the world's most luxurious watch brands, Rolex's new product launching steps are always highly interested by collectors.  Released this spring, the latest Datejust model will be part of the continued evolution of one of the company's most popular models, which is already 76 years old.

The new Datejust model will come in four different versions.  In particular, three have a shape that reminds the viewer of the heat of life with the palm leaf shape sinking into blue, gold and silver tones, and the Oyster strap.  The fourth version is completely different with a gold grooved dial with matching bezel and a Jubilee bracelet that mixes gold and steel.

All four models have 36mm cases and are powered by Rolex's self-winding 3235 movement, whose hairspring is made of niobium and zirconium alloys, making the watch insensitive to magnetic fields and temperature variations.  In addition, the movement's power reserve – i.e. how long the watch continues to run after it is removed from the hand – has been increased to three days.  Therefore, the buyer does not need to wear it continuously to maintain the operation of the watch.

These unique watch face motifs mentioned above are all made using lightning-fast laser technology.  Developed in the 1990s, the technique uses extremely short laser pulses - a femtosecond equal to a millionth of a billionth of a second so that no heat is generated when cutting into an object's surface.  In cataract surgery, a laser is used to cut into the surface of the eye more precisely than the most steady hand of the surgeon, and the obstruction is then removed.

For Datejust watches, these laser pulses are directed at the bronze dial to create a complex design that is only a few tenths of a micrometer deep.  And because this is Rolex, a company that is very good at keeping the craft, the entire sculpting process is done by in-house craftsmen, rather than outsourcing.

Despite using advanced laser technology, the new Datejust model is priced the same as previous comebacks, starting at $7,050.

The Datejust is a famous watch model that was first released on occasion of the 40th anniversary of Rolex brand establishment. The first Datejust was the Ref.4467 with a diameter of 36mm, with 3 watch hands and a calendar box located at 3 o'clock.  After more than 70 years, the Rolex Datejust has been produced with many improvements, including a 41mm dial and many trendy features but the 36mm version is still considered a traditional size.
