When it comes to probiotics, many people just think about simple Lactobacillus or type of bacteria found in yoghurt or kimchi which facilitates digestion. However, most do not think about vaginal health probiotics.

Probiotics has several types, including Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces and Streptococcus. All of them have been used for years for the benefits it brings to digestive health. Probiotics are healthy bacteria and often included in some foods and nutritional supplements. Recently, health experts have found the advantages of female health probiotics.
Vaginal health improvement is what all women are looking for. This is the reason why soon after the effectiveness of vaginal care products is revealed, they immediately are in high demand. Strengthening vaginal health, preventing vaginitis or urinary infections are the major benefits of vaginal probiotics.

Until now, there has not been officially announced a report on the effectiveness of vaginal health products except for L. acidophilus, a type of probiotics which could prevent and treat vaginal imbalance issues like bacterial vaginosis (BV). However, some evidence showing the advantages of good probiotics for women’s ph balance including:
A small study in 1996 revealed that women who ate probiotic yoghurt containing lactobacillus acidophilus frequently had a larger amount of this beneficial bacteria in their vaginas than those who did not eat.  These women also did not experience BV than the others. Through these results, we can see that probiotic does have some protective effects against vaginal imbalance.

Another study suggesting the effectiveness of vaginal health supplements was conducted on BV women. In this study, half of them were given antibiotics for 7 days. The other was given antibiotics with a probiotic or placebo for 30 days. The cure rate of each group were 90% in the antibiotic-plus-probiotic group and 40% in the antibiotic-plus-placebo group.

Women have been seeking for methods to improve their vaginal health. However, for years, only conventional treatments using antibiotics were popular. These methods, of course, are good because they eliminate harmful bacterias but when killing the harmful bacterias, the beneficial ones are also destroyed. Vaginal health vitamins, with its different approach, will improve the immune system through the proliferation of health agents.
Some research suggests the use of vaginal care probiotics can help in treating and establishing a healthy vaginal pH. However, more research is needed.
